Since our founding in 2008 by a passionate 11-year-old, Kids Against the Death Penalty has dedicated itself to raising awareness about the grave injustices associated with state-sanctioned killings. Our mission is clear: to shed light on a flawed system that has, time and again, wrongfully sentenced innocent individuals to death. Tragically, some of these innocent lives were extinguished before the truth could emerge, leaving behind a legacy of grief and injustice.
The death penalty is not just a legal issue; it’s a deeply human one that affects families, communities, and society as a whole. Imagine the heartache of having a loved one on death row. Families are torn apart, living in a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty, celebrating holidays and birthdays without their cherished ones. They endure the agonizing process of fighting for their loved ones' lives, sharing their stories, protesting in front of capitols, and hiring legal teams—often at great financial and emotional cost. This struggle for justice becomes an all-consuming endeavor, one that transforms lives forever.
In Texas, a state notorious for its high execution rate, the reality of wrongful convictions is stark. Under the governorship of Rick Perry, a staggering 279 executions occurred between 2000 and 2014. This number is not just a statistic; it represents real lives lost and families shattered. Since 1973, 200 individuals have been exonerated after spending time on death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Among these are 18 people wrongfully convicted in Texas.
The stories of Carlos DeLuna, Ruben Cantu, Cameron Todd Willingham, Gary Graham (Shaka Sankofa), Larry Swearingen, and the recent case of Ivan Cantu, executed on February 28, 2024, illustrate the urgent need for reform. Each of these cases is a haunting reminder of the flaws within our judicial system—failures that have cost innocent lives. DeLuna’s case, for example, raises profound questions about the reliability of eyewitness testimony and the systemic issues that allow such errors to occur.
As an organization, we believe it is our responsibility to speak out against this irreversible and barbaric punishment. The death penalty has no place in a modern society that values human rights and dignity. It serves neither as a deterrent to crime nor as a means of delivering true justice. Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of violence and despair.
We must recognize the broader implications of maintaining the death penalty. It disproportionately affects marginalized communities and people of color, revealing deep-seated racial and economic inequalities within the legal system. The emotional and psychological toll on families of both victims and the condemned is profound and lasting. The heartbreak and stigma associated with having a loved one on death row can ripple through entire communities, creating an atmosphere of fear and hopelessness.
However, there is hope. Change is possible, and we need your voice in this fight. Each of us has the power to inspire change—one voice can lead to another, and that ripple effect can spread awareness to hundreds, even thousands.
